7th Tennessee at Red Apple Farm : The flag of the Harris Rifles (Company D, 7th Tennessee) flew high above the annual Thanksgiving Harvest Festival held at the Red Apple Farm in Phillipston, Massachusetts, the weekend of November 21-22. This year Mother Nature smiled upon the Living History encampment; mild temperatures and bright skies contrasted sharply with last year's 9 degrees above zero windchill. Visitors to the festival were able to ask the reenactors questions about the life and times of a Confederate soldier during the Civil War. In addition to demonstrating the manual of arms and loading by nines, the reenactors fired a number of volleys. At the close of the festival, the 7th Tennessee packed away their tents, leathers and rifles and looked forward to the 2010 campaigning season. Liberty Greys at Chase Farm 2009 : Once more the Liberty Greys took the field at Chase Farm in Lincoln, RI and the rain finally caught up with us. Friday night, off and on Saturday and again Saturday night. Finally after an overcast Sunday morning, the sun broke through. We still had out Saturday drill and we did whip the Yankees that afternoon - in a heavvy mist. (NOTE: I missed some delightful deluge shots - I don't like to bring my cameras out in the rain) Thanks to TJ who offered to photograph Sunday's battle. He twisted his ankle on Saturday on the slippery grass and was drafted by the artillery. Sunday's battle was a hot one and TJ didn't have a moment to spare - especially when the Union Cavalry attacked the cannons. Bur he was able to avoid capture and took some before and after battle shots.

Liberty Greys Court Martial : The rain had finally stopped at Chase Farm and the sun was out, but still September 13 was a dark day for the Liberty Greys and for Company D, 7th Tennessee, in particular. Henry Arredondo, the former Captain of Company D and a highly respected officer and solder, was arrested and brought before a Military Tribunal charged with not only having a financial interest in Miss Joy's House of Pleasure and Pain, a local Bordello, but actively participating in the solicitation of clients to this house of ill repute. At times, the defendant appeared down right contemptuous of the proceedings, which drew the ire of the Sergeant-Major . Assisted by an attorney from the Southern New England School of Law, the defiant Arredondo claimed it was a case of mistaken identity; that it was actually his twin brother who was involved with Miss Joy and her beavy of buxom beauties. When asked to produce the 'mystery twin' Arrdando claimed he was killed at the battle of Woodbury just weeks earlier. Miss Joy herself was called upon by the court to offer expert testimony. Her detailed knowledge of Arredondo's financial stake in this disreputable business brought a gasp from the members of the court as well as from the trial's spectators. Also, Miss Joy proved once and for all that the individual standing before the court was indeed Henry Arredondo. You could say his fate was 'sealed with a kiss". Struck by the defendant's total disrespect for the court, his general arrogance and the overwhelming weight of the evidence, the court spent a scant 3 minutes conferring before returning a guilty verdict. Arrendondo was sentenced to 'ride the horse' through all three camps - infantry, artillery and cavalry. The Company D Provost Marshall as well as several armed guards made sure the sentence was carried out.

Liberty Greys at Gettysburg 2009 : Once again members of the Liberty Greys assembled at the Longstreet Memorial at Gettysburg National Military Park for a Living History weekend. Five times we crossed Confederate Avenue and stood on the hallowed field where 146 years ago the climactic Pettigrew-Picket's attack took place. Five times we demonstrated our military prowess for the visitors of thre Park. Special thanks goes to Betty Dion for taking the photos of our demonstrations. 149TH PA Infantry-Gettysburg : Milton S. Lawhead joined Company E of the 149th Pennsylvania Volunteer Infantry in August 1862. The regiment served in the defenses of Washington D.C. until May 1863. As part of the 1st Corp, Army of the Potomac, the 149th arrived at the McPherson farm northwest of the town of Gettysburg around 11:30 am, July 1. When the battle resumed later in the afternoon, the 149th faced north, crossed the Chambersburg Pike and halted several Confederate attacks. Eventually it recrossed the Pike a took up a position parallel to the road. By mid afternoon, overwhelmed by superior Confederate numbers, the 149th and the rest of the 1st Corps fell back to Seminary Ridge. The Confederates eventually pushed them off the ridge, through the town and onto the hills just south of Gettysburg. By 5pm the survivors regrouped on Cemetery Hill. Out of the fifty men who started the day with Milton's company (Company E), only eight men were available for duty. Milton was one of them. That was about the end of the fighting for the 149th. The shattered regiment was held in reserve July 2 and 3. Milton survived the battle and the war.

3rd Arkansas at Woodbury 2009 : Woodbury, CT, once again hosted a weekend Civil War Reenactment. Members of Companies A and H, 3rd Arkansas, sweated through 95 degree heat to reenact battles from the 1864 Shenandoah Valley Campaign.

Old Beth Page 2009 : Everyone remembers Jackson's famous flanking march that smashed the Union right at Chancellorsville in May 1863. Fast foward to July 2009. The 3rd Arkansas, with about 25,993 less men, did the same to the Union right at the Battle of Old Beth Page. To quote a very wise man, "We came. We saw. We kicked butt!" Liberty Greys at Gettysburg 2008 : For several years now the Gettysburg National Military Park hosts Living History Encampments that allow visitors to interact with reenactors and learn through discussion and demonstration. The Liberty Greys, a New England based group that conduct Civil War battle and living history reenactments portraying Confederate soldiers and civilians, has been fortunate to have been selected to participate in this program. This year we made our camp in Pitzer's Woods near the General James Longstreet monument. 3rd Arkansas at Old Bethpage, NY 2008 : From March through December, Old Bethpage recreates the atmosphere of a mid-1800s Long Island Village on some 200 acres of rolling hills with more than 55 historic buildings -- all original structures saved from destruction and moved to the site. Each July Old Bethpage plays host to Civil War reenactors. For the second year in a row members Company A, 3rd Arkansas, CSA, participated in a weekend of battles. 2009 Neshaminy Reenactment : April 18-19 was a beautiful weekend on the banks of the Delaware River at Neshaminy State Park (just north of Philadelphia). Members of the 3rd Arkansas fell in with the 9th Virginia and gave the Yankees what fer.

2008 Neshaminy Reenactment : Located on the western bank of the Delaware River just north of Philadelphia, Neshaminy State Park is the setting for an annual Civil War weekend. Members of the Companies A and H, 3rd Arkansas, Army of Northern Virginia, CSA, travelled from New England to participate in this year's event. Liberty Greys at Amesbury, MA, 2007 : Members of the Liberty Greys, a Confederate Civil War reenactment organization, and the New England Brigade, their Union counterparts, gathered at the Woodsom Farm in Amesbury, MA, the weekend of June 2 and 3. Proceeds went to the restoration of the vandalized 11th Mass monument at Gettysburg National Battlefiled. Spectators were treated to lively and spirited battles both days but Mother Nature took the prize for her fireworks display early Saturday evening. She also provided some participants with a new lake. Unfortunately I was unable to take any photos of the battles - since my company was in the thick of it both days. Battle of Hillbrook Orchard - Groton 2007 : Once again Groton Mass was the scene of a clash between the Blue and the Grey in July 2007. My son and daughter-in-law paid a visit on Sunday as well as my good friend Steve St. Lawrence. You can see their photos of the evnet as well as my own. Battle of Hillbrook Orchard - Groton 2007

2007 Battle of Murdock Farm - Winchendon : The Murdock Farm, located in Winchendon, Massachusetts, was transformed into Virginia's Shenandoah Valley the first weekend in October. In order to deprive Rebel General Lee with much needed supplies, units from the Federal New England Brigade were ordered to occupy the Valley, the bread-basket of the South. In addition, they were to destroy crops and burn farms. Marching to save the farms from destruction and to drive the invading Yankees from the Valley were soldiers of the 6th Regiment, Longstreet's Division, Army of Northern Virginia - better know as the Liberty Greys. As living historians the reenactors strive to honor the memory of those who fought in this terrible war by portraying those brave soldiers in camp activites and on the battlefield. The Friday reenacment was the Battle of Fox's Gap, a bloody delaying action by Lee's Confederates that preceeded the clash at Sharpsburg by a few days. 3rd Arkansas - Memorial Day Parade 2006 : The residents of Charlestown, Rhode Island, once again welcomed Company A, 3rd Arkansas during their annual Memorial Day Parade. Whereas last year we were treated to a few scattered showers to cool things off, this year we basically roasted. "We got to toughen up for First Manassas," Captain Bill Gosselin explained. "End of July - central Virginia - should be a hot one."
