Nubble Lighthouse, Maine : Cape Neddick Lighthouse is also called Nubble Light because it sits on a barren rocky island (the Nubble) just off shore in York, Maine.

Although you can see Nubble Light from a number of spots along the coast in York, the best up-close view is from Sohier Park. This beautiful spot 200 yards from the Nubble offers an unobstructed view with perfect photo opportunities.

You can sit on a bench and watch the ocean surge around the rocky headlands, climb over the rocks along shore, or browse in the gift shop. What you CAN'T do is actually go onto the island the lighthouse sits on.

Nubble Lighthouse - People

Portsmouth, NH, lighthouse : The large, well-protected harbor of Portsmouth, New Hampshire, was an important port in colonial America. In 1771 the Royal Governor John Wentworth had a wooden lighthouse built at Fort William and Mary (later named Fort Constitution) on Great Island, in what is now the town of New Castle in Portsmouth Harbor, about a mile from the mouth of the Piscataqua River.

Construction began in April and the tower was first lighted by early July of 1771. The shingled tower was about 50 feet tall and was topped by an iron lantern with a copper roof, with the light produced by three oil lamps made of copper.

A new 48-foot cast-iron lighthouse tower was erected in 1878 on the same foundation as the previous tower. The lighthouse was painted a reddish-brownish color until 1902, when it was painted white. Apparently for a time in the early 1920s it was again painted reddish-brown. Since then it has been white.

Annisquam Lighthouse at sunrise : The village of Annisquam, located at the mouth of the Annisquam River in Gloucester on Massachusetts' Cape Ann, apparently got its name from the combination of "Ann" and "squam.", an Indian name for a harbor. The first European settlement in Annisquam was established in 1631. In more recent times, artist Winslow Homer and writer Rudyard Kipling spent time at Annisquam, and Russel Crouse and Howard Lindsay wrote The Sound of Music in the picturesque village.

Point Judith Lighthouse : Point Judith, Rhode Island, has been referred to as the "Cape Hatteras of New England" because the treacherous waters and rocks off the coast have caused so many ship wrecks.

The site was acquired in 1809 from Hazard Knowles and the first lighthouse at Point Judith was built in 1810 by William Ellery, a signer of the Declaration of Independence. It was an octagonal wooden tower. The lighthouse was built to mark the entrance to the Narragansett Bay to the north and Block Island Sound to the south.

The wooden tower was destroyed by a storm on September 17, 1815 and was replaced in 1816 by a 35-foot stone tower that was coated with cement. In 1857 the current lighthouse was built to replace the 35-foot stone tower. It was a 51-foot octagonal brownstone tower. The lower half was white and the upper half brown.

Eastern Point, Gloucester : Eastern Point, at the entrance to Gloucester Harbor, has been home to farms, a quarry, a Civil War fort, a number of summer residences and the Eastern Point Yacht Club.

A stone lighthouse, 30 feet high, was erected and first lighted on January 1, 1832. The third and present Eastern Point Light was built in 1890 on the old foundation of the 1832 tower.

Then, between 1894 and 1905, a 2,250-foot breakwater in front of the lighthouse was built. At the end of this breakwater is another light, Gloucester Breakwater Light, established to mark dangerous Dog Bar Reef.
