The village of Annisquam, located at the mouth of the Annisquam River in Gloucester on Massachusetts' Cape Ann, apparently got its name from the combination of "Ann" and "squam.", an Indian name for a harbor. The first European settlement in Annisquam was established in 1631. In more recent times, artist Winslow Homer and writer Rudyard Kipling spent time at Annisquam, and Russel Crouse and Howard Lindsay wrote The Sound of Music in the picturesque village.
