Battle Road 14 April 2007 : On April 14, 2007, British and Colonial reenactors portrayed a "typical" day leading up to the outbreak of war on April 19, 1775. Activities included drill and musket firing demonstrations, cooking, clothing repair and recruiting for the colonial militia as well as life in the British camp. The day's activities were capped by a reeanactment of the British retreat from Concord to Boston along Battle Road. With the skirmishes at Lexington Green and the North Bridge in Concord behind them, the British began the long march back to Bosotn. General Thomas Gage, British Military Governor of Massachusetts, wrote, "On the Return of the Troops they were attacked from all Quarters where any Cover was to be found, from whence it was practicable to annoy them, and they were so fatigued with their March that it was with Difflculty they could keep out their Flanking Partys to remove the Enemy to a Distance, so that they were at length a good deal pressed." The British had started their march with 700 soldiers. By the time they returned to Boston they had suffered 73 killed, 174 wounded and 26 missing.
